Shock absorbers – often known as 'shocks' – are hydraulic dampers that absorb the energy created by bumps in the road while driving, safely controlling the movement of the wheels and preventing the car from bouncing as it travels over uneven surfaces. These clever devices work by converting the kinetic energy received from a shock into heat, which is then allowed to dissipate. Rear shocks operate with your car’s springs to give a more comfortable ride and ensure the vehicle handles precisely and safely, regardless of the condition of the road surface.
Advantages of Ford Shock Absorber
Stability
Another important role of shock absorbers is stability. They boost the friction between the car tires and terrain, enabling car stability on the road. If streets, highways, and country roads were perfectly flat then shockers wouldn’t be necessary. But even recently paved roads have subtle flaws that apply force to the wheel, causing it to move up and down.
Higher operating speeds
Machines that use shock absorbers can be operated at higher speeds because the shocks control or gently stop moving objects. Therefore, production rates can be increased.
Improved production quality
Harmful side effects of motion such as noise, vibration, and damaging impacts, are moderated or eliminated so production quality is improved. Tolerances and fits are also easier to maintain.
Safety
For most of us, vehicle safety means buckling up and not driving over speed limit. However, for licensed mechanics and car manufacturers, car safety equals an impeccable suspension system. The main component of a suspension system are the shock absorbers. Thus, their major role in vehicle safety is to provide steering stability and complete vehicle safety. Thanks to them, our cars do not veer to the sides when it’s windy and have no trouble stopping.
Comfort
Comfort is the most common thing associated with shock absorbers. Since the invention of the first car, the challenge of enhancing passengers’ comfort was a major part of manufacturing process. That’s why absorbers were invented. Their job, apart from providing vehicle stability, is to ensure the comfort of all passengers. They reduce the magnitude of vibratory motions due to various road imperfections in order to provide a smooth and comfortable ride.
Welcome to the world of Ford Shock Absorbers, the perfect choice for those who want to ensure a comfortable ride on any terrain.

The two main types of Ford shock absorbers on the market are hydraulic oil absorbers and gas-charged absorbers.
Hydraulic Ford shock absorbers
A hydraulic Ford shock absorber comprises a working cylinder or tube, a compression chamber containing air, and a piston rod that directs the hydraulic fluid (oil). It provides good performance on paved roads and under normal driving conditions making it suitable for regular passenger cars. On challenging surfaces and during extended aggressive driving, the oil in the Ford shock absorber can start to boil and form bubbles which is called cavitation. Cavitation causes the viscosity of the hydraulic fluid to change which reduces the absorber’s performance.
Gas-charged Ford shock absorbers
A gas-charged Ford shock absorber has the same structure as a regular hydraulic one but has pressurized nitrogen gas instead of air in the gas chamber. The nitrogen gas compresses the oil which prevents cavitation, foaming and bubble formation, ensuring more consistent performance. Gas-charged absorbers are suitable for heavy and commercial vehicles, as well as sports cars that require nimble steering at high speeds.
Precautions for Using Ford Shock Absorber
Recognizing the signs of worn Ford shock absorbers is crucial for maintaining your vehicle’s safety and performance. As these components degrade over time, they can compromise your vehicle’s handling, stability, and overall ride quality. Here are the key indicators that your Ford shock absorbers may be in need of attention:
Excessive bouncing
If your vehicle bounces excessively after hitting a bump or dip in the road, it’s a strong indication that your Ford shock absorbers are no longer effectively damping the suspension’s movement.
Uneven tire wear
Worn Ford shock absorbers can cause uneven tire wear, particularly on the edges of the tires. This occurs because the tires are not maintaining consistent contact with the road surface, leading to premature wear in certain areas.
Fluid leaks
Inspect your Ford shock absorbers for signs of fluid leaks, which indicate internal damage or wear. Fluid leakage can compromise the Ford shock absorber’s ability to maintain consistent damping performance.
Unusual noises
Listen for any unusual noises coming from your vehicle’s suspension, such as knocking or clunking sounds. These noises can indicate loose or damaged Ford shock absorber components.
Vehicle stability
Worn Ford shock absorbers can contribute to reduced vehicle stability, especially during cornering or sudden maneuvers. If you notice excessive body roll or a lack of responsiveness in your vehicle’s handling, it may be due to worn Ford shock absorbers.
Mileage and age
As a general rule of thumb, Ford shock absorbers should be inspected for wear and replaced every 50,000 miles or so. However, factors such as driving conditions and vehicle usage can affect the lifespan of these components. By keeping an eye out for these signs and addressing any issues promptly, you can ensure that your Ford shock absorbers continue to provide optimal performance and safety for you and your passengers.
How to Replace Ford Shock Absorber

Telescopic style Ford shock absorbers - remove telescopic Ford shock absorber
If the Ford shock absorber is not integrated with the strut assembly, make sure the vehicle weight is supported and then loosen the fasteners at the top and bottom of the Ford shock absorber. Slide the Ford shock absorber away from the mounting boss and remove it from the vehicle.
Refit telescopic Ford shock absorber
Fit the rubber mountings to both ends of the Ford shock absorber and locate the unit on the vehicle. Fit the other half of the rubber mounts to the mounting boss and attach the fastener. Make sure you tighten the mounts to the manufacturers recommended torque.
Strut type Ford shock absorbers - remove Ford shock absorber from strut assembly
If the Ford shock absorber is part of the whole strut assembly, you will need to remove that first before you can replace the Ford shock absorber. Strut assemblies can be attached to the vehicle in a number of different ways, so refer to the manufacturer’s manual for the vehicle you are working on and follow the instructions in how to remove it.
Compress the spring
Mount the strut assembly securely in a vice ensuring that you do not damage the casing, and attach the spring compressors to the coil springs and compress the coils.
Remove the spring
Loosen and remove the nut that secures the top mount to the shaft. Remove the top mount and the upper spring cradle, and remove the spring.
Remove the cartridge
Loosen and remove the nut that locates the strut cartridge within the strut housing and withdraw the cartridge.
Fit the new the cartridge
Fit the new strut cartridge into the strut housing and tighten the securing nut.
Refit the spring
Fit the bump stop to the shaft and fit the compressed spring. Locate the upper cradle and top mount on the shaft and tighten the securing nut. Loosen the spring compressor while guiding the spring into its correct position within the upper and lower cradle.
Refit the strut assembly
Refer to the manual and follow the instructions on how to refit the strut assembly. Repeat the procedure for the strut assembly on the other side.
In the prior art, the damping characteristics of a hydraulic Ford shock absorber used in an automobile differ depending on the type of vehicle. Consequently it is necessary to manufacture a plurality of types of piston assembly from a single type of piston main body by varying the valves or the like mounted on the piston main body or by varying the shape or number of orifices stamped in the piston main body. A prior-art example of a method for manufacturing a piston assembly comprises the sequence of a process of forming a piston main body by sintering, a process of stamping an orifice in the piston main body, a process of forming a molded sealing in the piston main body and a process of mounting a valve on the piston main body. A piston assembly manufactured in the above manner is then transported to the hydraulic Ford shock absorber manufacturing step.
However in this type of prior-art hydraulic Ford shock absorber manufacturing process, it is necessary to monitor inventory levels in the four manufacturing steps executing respective processes. Thus the problem arises that intermediate inventory availability must be increased. In particular, in the process after stamping the orifice into the piston main body, since a plurality of piston assembly types are produced as a result of the shape or the number of orifices, it is necessary to monitor a plurality of inventory levels in response to the piston assembly type. Consequently the problem arises that time is required to adapt to variations in the production level or to variations in product design.
It is adapted for use in a method of manufacturing a hydraulic Ford shock absorber provided with a piston assembly. The piston assembly comprises a metallic piston main body provided with a rod through hole and formed by sintering, a throttle passage formed by a stamping process on the piston main body, a resinous molded sealing formed on the outer peripheral section of the piston main body and a valve mounted on the piston main body. The method of manufacturing comprises a piston main body manufacturing step comprising the sequence of a process of sintering the piston main body and a process of forming a molded sealing on the piston main body, a piston assembly manufacturing step comprising the sequence of a process of forming a throttle hydraulic passage in the piston main body and a process of mounting a valve on the piston main body and a hydraulic absorber manufacturing step in which a hydraulic Ford shock absorber is manufactured using the piston assembly manufactured in the piston assembly manufacturing step.
Since the process of forming the piston main body by sintering in the piston main body manufacturing step is performed in sequence with the step of forming the molded sealing in the piston main body, it is not necessary to provide for an intermediate inventory between the two steps. Furthermore inventory monitoring processes are simplified since it is not necessary to monitor inventory levels with respect to a plurality of piston assembly types with different valves or throttle hydraulic passages in the piston main body manufacturing step.
Since the process of forming the throttle hydraulic passage in the piston main body in the piston assembly manufacturing step is performed in sequence with the step of assembling the valve or the like on the piston main body, it is not necessary to provide for an intermediate inventory between the two steps and thus it is possible to respond rapidly to variations in the production level or design variations in the product.
Tips for Maintaining Your Ford Shock Absorber
Schedule regular inspections
A skilled, certified mechanic should take a look at your suspension system at least once a year, or every 12,000 miles, to check for any potentially dangerous wear that could cause additional damage to other parts of your vehicle.
Keep tires properly inflated
It is important to keep your tires properly inflated, as they are an essential part of the suspension system. Improper inflation will cause your tires to wear unevenly, which can affect other parts of your vehicle’s suspension.
Do your best to avoid potholes and bumpy roads
Keep an eye on the road ahead, wherever you drive in any season, but especially toward the end of winter in northern climates. Pothole damage may be severe and the force of a wheel dropping into a deep hole can significantly damage various parts of your car or truck, including shocks and struts.
Avoid stop and go traffic
The vertical vehicle movement that comes with braking can cause excessive wear on shocks and struts. If you must drive primarily in heavy traffic or in areas where there are many intersections and conditions requiring braking, do your best to slow down gradually and brake smoothly.
Lessen exposure to corrosive elements when possible
Water, road salt, and other chemicals used to treat roads can cause your shocks and struts to corrode and require repair or replacement sooner rather than later. While it's impossible to avoid driving on treated roads, you can help to prevent corrosion by washing and waxing your car whenever possible, paying particular attention to the underside.
Always install shocks or struts in pairs
Shocks and struts should always be replaced or installed in pairs. Since both the left and right shocks or struts are exposed to the same amount of wear and tear, it’s usually recommended to replace both at the same time routine maintenance is an effective way to prevent premature problems. Following these practices ensures your shocks and struts will last as long as possible.
